Garden waste winners receive free service

16 June 2008

Three residents in Amber Valley are set to receive the Borough Council’s new garden waste collection service completely free of charge after their names were drawn out of a wheelie bin in a prize draw competition!

Amber Valley Borough Council introduced its fortnightly garden waste collection service in May, in direct response to requests from residents. The service, which covers the whole of the Borough, has an annual fee of £39 – that’s just 75 pence per week, or even less if neighbours club together and share a bin. Residents were offered the chance to be entered into a prize draw to have their fee refunded, if they subscribed to the service before the end of March 2008.

Councillor Jean Gemmell, Mayor of Amber Valley, picked the three lucky winners at random from over 1,500 people who subscribed to the new service before it went live. The winners are from Duffield, Heanor and Kirk Langley.

Councillor Jack Brown, Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener and Safer at Amber Valley Borough Council said “We had a lot of requests for a garden waste collection service and we’ve been delighted with the initial response from residents once we decided to introduce it Borough-wide.

“The good news is that it’s still not too late to subscribe! With summer fast approaching now is the ideal time to sign up for the collection service and get all your grass cuttings, prunings, weeds and other garden waste taken away and disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.”

If you are interested in subscribing to the garden waste collection service, or would like further information about the scheme, please ring the Council’s Refuse and Recycling Helpline on 01773 841326.
