Recycling figures reach a new high

26 June 2008

Residents in Amber Valley are recycling more of their rubbish than ever before!

New figures show that the amount of household waste recycled in the Borough increased from 10,650 tonnes in 2006/07 to 11,188 tonnes during 2007/08.This means that 26.79% of all household waste in the Borough was sent for recycling – up from 25.64% the previous year.

The amount of waste collected in the Borough over the year has also reduced by 240 tonnes – the equivalent of 24 double decker buses!

As well as having a beneficial effect on the environment, this increase is saving taxpayers money, as the Council is charged for every tonne of waste taken to landfill sites.

The Council is now urging residents to keep up the good work.Councillor Jack Brown, Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener and Safer at Amber Valley Borough Council said “We’re delighted that people are keen to play an active part in helping us reduce waste, recycle more and send less rubbish to landfill sites.

“Residents across the Borough are already recycling huge amounts of waste, both at the kerbside and through our recycling sites. We’d like to thank them for all their great efforts so far, and hope that we can continue to boost our recycling figures by increasing the amount of waste products recycled in Amber Valley.”

During the year Amber Valley Borough Council has taken a number of steps to encourage people to reduce, reuse and recycle their rubbish:

  • It has increased the number of recycling sites in the Borough from 40 to 47.A further four sites are in the pipeline for later this year.
  • Earlier this year it upgraded all its recycling sites across the Borough to include new, larger plastic recycling banks that can also take waxed drink cartons (Tetra Paks).
  • In May it introduced a brand new garden waste collection scheme that currently collects from over 1,800 households in the Borough.

Councillor Brown added “These new facilities are part of our ongoing drive to improve our recycling service and make it easier for people to recycle.”
