Children from Lons Infant School in Ripley will help plant a flowerbed in Crossley Park – and what will make it extra special is that the flowerbed has been designed by one of the pupils at the school!
In April Lons Infant School approached Amber Valley Borough Council asking if they could officially adopt Crossley Park. The pupils recently attended an official ceremony to mark the adoption and celebrate the raising of the Green Flag in the Park, during which they helped plant an oak tree donated by the School.
Children from across all year groups also took part in a competition, organised by the Council, to design a flowerbed for the Park. The winner and runners up were announced at the School’s end of term summer concert, and were each presented with a framed copy of their design by Councillor Jack Brown.
Headteacher Linda Williams said, “All the children have really enjoyed taking part in the competition and are looking forward to helping plant and look after the flower bed. Being involved with Crossley Park has been a tremendous boost for the school, especially as we don’t have large grounds of our own. We hope adopting the Park will encourage the children to continue being responsible for it as they grow up.”
Councillor Jack Brown, Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener and Safer at Amber Valley Borough Council added, “It was extremely difficult to pick just one winner from all the excellent entries in this competition, so well done to the overall winner - Benjamin Colledge - and all the runners up. It has been a pleasure working with Lons Infant School to help improve Crossley Park and we look forward to seeing their flowerbed design come to life next Spring.”
