Abandoned vehicle numbers plummet in Amber Valley

22 August 2008

The streets of Amber Valley are getting cleaner, after new figures reveal that the number of abandoned vehicles reported in the Borough has fallen by an incredible 88% over the last four years.

Back in 2003 Amber Valley Borough Council had to clear away 231 abandoned vehicles but last year this fell to an all time low of just 27.

This massive drop is thought to be as a result of tougher enforcement, new rules deterring would-be car dumpers and higher scrap metal prices.

Councillor Jack Brown, Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener and Safer at Amber Valley Borough Council said, “We’re determined to win the battle against unsightly abandoned cars being left on our streets. Abandoned vehicles are not only an eyesore, they can attract crime and have a detrimental effect on residents’ perception of their neighbourhood, especially if the vehicles end up getting vandalised or burnt out. We are committed to ensuring that any cars left dumped on the streets are removed as quickly as possible and would urge anyone concerned about a vehicle left in their area to contact us so we can take steps to deal with it.”

Once a vehicle is reported abandoned, we will carry out the relevant checks and issue a warning notice (in the form of a yellow ’Council Aware’ sticker) that the vehicle is suspected abandoned and the owner or keeper should either come forward or remove it.

If no owner, keeper or responsible parties come forward, we then place a 24 hour or 15 day notice on the vehicle (the type of notice is dependent on the situation and location). If the vehicle is still there after the notice has expired, we will then remove it. Burnt out vehicles will be removed once the police and insurance companies inform us they have no interest.
