HEANOR SHOPS EMBRACE THE ARTS
Working in partnership with Aldercar Community Language College, Amber Valley Borough Council is unveiling the Heanor Shop Art Project, as another element in the Heanor Masterplan, to rejuvenate the town centre
Year 12 and 13 students have produced a number of pieces of artwork for their National Diploma in Art & Design and have agreed to display their works in two key locations within Heanor Town Centre. Jane Richards, owner of Heanor Antiques, has provided the Craft Centre window to promote the project, and Stephen Elder, of Elder & Twells, has provided the vacant premises at 3 Market Street.
Martin Hodge, Faculty Leader of Creative & Performing Arts at Aldercar Community Language College said: “This is something we have been desperate to do for a long time. We produce such high quality work but nobody ever gets to see it. This way the art is out there for the public to see. It’s our chance to give something back to the community who give us so much support and that can only be good for the students, for the College and for the Community.“
Commenting on the project, Amber Valley Borough Council’s Cabinet Support Member for Quality of Place, Cllr. Kevin Parkinson, said: “The shop art project is a new initiative for Heanor to improve the appearance of the townscape for shoppers and visitors, by displaying artwork by talented local youngsters. We would encourage other owners of vacant premises to get involved in the scheme and make their shop frontages more appealing and help encourage new businesses to the area.”
