In this section we have listed a number of the most frequently asked questions that we have been asked as the Funding Team. We hope that they will give you some more information about funding applications and the processes and situations that you might face.

After I have contacted the Funding Team, what happens next?

We will use all the information that you have given us about your project or group and complete a search for funding using our database Grantfinder. We will then send you the report with potential funders for you to contact for further information and application packs.

How do we apply for funding?

Mostly through application forms, but some funders will ask for a letter outlining the project proposal. You will be able to get the most up to date application when you contact the funders.

Can we apply on line?

In a lot of cases you can apply on line. If you are planning to do this is, it is worthwhile to print a copy to complete in rough before you fill in the final application. Don’t forget to print off copies for your records! If you need to answer questions you will have all the information to hand.

What deadlines are involved?

Some grants do not have deadlines and you can apply at any time in the year. Other funding schemes have specific dates throughout the year when applications must be received by. Remember to ask for the next deadline when contacting funders for the first time, this will give you enough time to complete your application without rushing it.

What do I need to include with my application?

You may be asked to submit additional information with your application. This may include your constitution, audited accounts, bank statements, quotations for work or your project proposal.

What is ‘match funding’?

‘Match or Partnership funding’ is where a funding body won’t fund 100% of your project costs – the exact percentage will be made clear when you receive the information pack for the application. You will need to secure extra money to ensure that you can fund the project totally. Sometimes this extra funding can be ‘in-kind contributions’.

What are ‘in-kind contributions’?

An in-kind contribution is a non-cash input which can be given a cash value, this could be volunteer time for labour etc.

How will my application be assessed?

Applications can be assessed in a variety of ways, some funders have a set scoring system where marks are awarded against a criteria, others could be through a meeting of trustees and based on how well your project meets their priorities. All the information about the assessment process should be in the application pack, it doesn’t hurt to ask and it pays to know how your application will be assessed when you write it.

How long will it take funders to make a decision?

This depends on a number of different things, for example, how big the grant is (the larger it is the longer it takes as a general rule) and when the assessment panel meets. The decision time can take from a number of weeks to months. Again, ask about this when you contact the funders especially if you are planning a project for a certain time of year.

How will we be told if we are successful – or not?

It is normal practice to receive a letter confirming your grant offer, in some cases funders may telephone to confirm but this is rare.

If you are not successful you will receive a letter to tell you, but you will not always receive feedback. If you would like feedback on the reasons why you were not successful contact the funder and ask, the feedback may be done over the phone or in writing.
