Real Christmas Trees:
After Christmas you can recycle your real Christmas tree at all of Derbyshire’s Household Waste and Recycling Centres, including Taylor Lane, Loscoe. Or, from 31st December until January 13th you could take it to Shipley Garden Centre, Hassock Lane, North Shipley, Heanor. Please note however, that both the garden centre and the tip are closed on New Years day.
Christmas Cards:
Recycle your Christmas cards in your orange bag or take them to WHSmith, Tesco, TKMaxx or Marks & Spencer’s. Funds raised through taking your cards to any of these stores will be used by the Woodland Trust to plant and maintain woodlands throughout the UK. If you are connected to the Internet, why not send ecards to your family and friends this Christmas.
Wrapping Paper:
As much as 83km2 of wrapping paper could end up in this country’s bins during this seasonal time of year –– you can cover over 17,000 football pitches with that! Or, you could place it in your blue bag for collection or, take it to your nearest local recycling site. Please note that the ‘metallic’ type of Christmas wrap is not recyclable.
Old/unwanted Clothes, Games and Toys:
Make room for new clothes, toys and books by donating old and unwanted items to charity shops. Or you could take clothes and shoes to your nearest clothes and shoe banks. Visit the Council's recycling site finder for details of your nearest site.
Mobile Phones:
Mobile phones are popular gifts at Christmas and a large proportion of them replace older handsets. Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s both offer a service to recycle these old mobiles. For information go to www.tescomobilerecycle.com or www.sainsburys.co.uk or visit your local store and ask for the recycling envelopes to place the phones in. The envelopes are freepost.
Batteries:
Buy rechargeable batteries and a battery charger for the new toys and games you will give and receive.
Food Waste:
Around a third of all the food we buy ends up being thrown away. Avoid buying too much food with a short shelf life and try and maximise leftovers. Plan meals and resist impulse buying by using a shopping list. Only purchase the ‘buy one get one free’ offers if you are sure you will use both products. For more information visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com. And, don’t forget to compost if you have a home composter.
Shopping Bags:
Remember to take reusable shopping bags with you to the shops. Or, reuse your plastic carrier bags.
Packaging:
Try to buy products that do not use too much packaging. For example, buy loose fruit and vegetables.
New Year Resolution:
Make a New Year resolution to recycle more.
