Household waste collection
Description of service
As a waste collection authority, the Council provides services for household waste collection. For each household, an alternate weekly collection service is provided where different types of rubbish are collected on different weeks. Wheeled bins or purple sacks for refuse is collected one week and boxes and bags for recycling are collected the next.
In accordance with the Environmental Protection Act (1990), every authority in the UK is permitted to introduce schemes that encourage recycling and reduce waste being sent to landfill. Around 150 other local authorities have introduced similar schemes. We have to do this to reduce the amount of waste collected, and increase the amount of waste recycled. The Government has imposed statutory recycling targets, which, if not met could lead to financial penalties being imposed and have an effect on Council Tax levels. For Amber Valley, the current recycling rate is 28.5%. The Government has set a national target of 40% recycling and composting by 2013.
