Household waste collection
Description of service
Amber Valley Borough Council is a Waste Collection Authority which means that it is responsible for providing a household waste collection for its residents. Amber Valley residents have their waste and recyclables collected on alternate weeks. This means that on one week wheeled bins / purple sacks of waste are collected and on the next week the boxes and bags for recycling are collected.
In accordance with the Environmental Protection Act (1990), every authority in the UK is permitted to introduce schemes that encourage recycling and reduce waste being sent to landfill. Around 150 other local authorities have introduced similar schemes. We have to do this to reduce the amount of waste collected, and increase the amount of waste recycled. The Government has imposed statutory recycling targets, which, if not met could lead to financial penalties being imposed and have an effect on Council Tax levels. In Amber Valley, the recycling, reuse and composting rate for 2009/10 was 28.4%. The Government has set a national target of 40% recycling and composting by 2013.
