Standards Committee

Description of service

The main role of the Standards Committee is to promote and maintain high standards of conduct amongst members of the Borough Council and members of Parish Councils in the Borough. The Committee is made up of eleven members; three independent members (one of whom is the Chairman); six borough council members and two parish representatives.

The Chairman of the Standards Committee is to be appointed by the Committee on 28 May 2008.

The Standards Committee is currently responsible for the following main activities:

(a)Promoting and maintaining high standards of conduct by Borough Councillors, Parish Councillors and co-opted members.

(b)Ensuring members are trained to carry out their duties effectively

(c) Advising on the Members' Code of Conduct and protocols

(d) Monitoring the operation of the Model Code of Conduct

(e) Dealing with the local assessment of complaints

(f) Conducting of local hearings and determination of sanctions should a breach of the Code of Conduct be found

(g) Overview of the Planning Code of Conduct

(h) Oversight of the Council's Constitution

(i) Overview of the Council's Whistleblowing Policy

(j) Matters relating to politically restricted posts

Members' Code of Conduct

The Local Authorities (Model Code of Conduct) Order 2007 which prescribed a revised model Code of Conduct for members of local authorities including parish and town councils was adopted by the Borough Council on 16 May 2007. All Parish and Town Councils have also adopted the Code on dates shown

Complaints Procedure

If you want to complain about the conduct of a member of Amber Valley Borough Council or a Member of one of our parish/town councils, you must submit your complaint in writing to:

The Standards Committee can only deal with complaints about the behaviour of a Member. It will not deal with complaints about things that are not covered by the Members' Code of Conduct. If you make a complaint to the Standards Committee it must be about why you think a Member has not followed the Code of Conduct.
