Citizens' panels

Description of service

Amber Valley Consultation Panel was set up in 2001 as a way to keep the Council and its partners, including Derbyshire County Council (DCC) and Derbyshire Police, informed about public opinion of the services we provide and to ask what issues are important to them. The Panel is made up of 1000 people from across Amber Valley who regularly share their views and ideas on a wide range of issues. We give Members regular feedback on what actions have been taken as a result of their views in a newsletter, the Amber Voice, that is sent out with every questionnaire. Copies of all past newsletters are available by selecting the link 'Citizens' Panel Newsletters' under Further Details, on the right hand side of the page.

A Citizens’ Panel is a representative sample of residents who have agreed to regularly take part in consultation either by filling in questionnaires or taking part in focus groups or workshops.

Who is on the Consultation Panel?

In 2001 local residents were selected at random from the electoral register and sent a recruitment questionnaire, inviting them to take part. From the responses 1000 people were selected and invited to join the Panel. Since then, a third of the Panel has been replaced each year to enable more residents to take part. The Panel includes people from all backgrounds and all parts of Amber Valley area. It is designed to be broadly representative of the Borough as a whole. The Panel aims to reflect the diversity of the area in terms of ward, gender, age, ethnicity, disability.

What do Panel Members do?

The 1000 members on the Panel are asked to answer approximately four questionnaires per year on a variety of topics including: crime and safety, quality of live and leisure.
