Listed buildings

Description of service

Buildings are ‘listed’ if they are of special architectural or historic interest. The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport compiles the list, following advice from English Heritage.

There are over 1000 listed buildings within the Borough. Law protects buildings that are placed on the statutory list and any alterations to them require listed building consent.

The listing gives protection to the listed building, any object or structure attached to it and any object, structure or wall within its curtilage built before 1st July 1948.

For advice on makiing alterations to listed buildings or buildings within the curtilage of a listed building, please click on the link to the Listed Buildings and Buildings in Conservation Areas Supplementary Planning Document.

To find out if your property is a listed building please use the link to the Listed Building Register or the My Property section of this web site.
