Community Sports and Lesiure Facilities

Description of service

Community Sports and Leisure Facilities

As you have probably seen in the news over the past few months, Amber Valley Borough Council has undergone a significant restructure to address the budget deficit that has been identified. This has resulted in a reduction in some services delivered by the Council and consequently staff redundancies have been implemented. The Cultural & Health Development section has been disbanded from the re-structure with all posts in the Leisure, Sports and Arts Development teams being made redundant.

The restructure has however provided 2 new posts that have a sport/leisure remit and demonstrates that the Council is still committed to certain areas of this work. The new posts and some of their key functions are;

1) Community Sports & Well-Being Coordinator

  • Work strategically to coordinate sports and well-being activities in Amber Valley
  • Work with key partners to identify areas of joint working on sports and well-being initiatives
  • Play a central role in the development of the local Community Sports Network (Amber Valley Active) and the associated Community Investment Funded (CIF) projects
  • Work with the Council's Leisure operators (DC Leisure & Belper Leisure Centre Trust) to develop sports & healthy lifestyle plans to maximise the use of facilities for the community

2) Leisure Facilities Officer

  • Responsible for the operational management of Charles Hill Sports Complex
  • Monitor the Leisure PFI Project Agreement & Belper Leisure Centre Service Level Agreements
  • Work with Clubs and Organisations to improve facility infrastructure
  • Take a lead in respect of disability sport and safeguarding children's agenda

Through the redeployment process that took place, Gareth Buckley (previously Sports Development Officer) was appointed into the first role and Sharon Brown (previously Me & U Project Officer) the second. However, since these appointments Gareth has accepted a job offer with Sports Leaders UK and will be leaving the Council on Friday 6th February. This role will be replaced in the coming months.

The points of contact here for sports/leisure matters will be either Sharon Brown or Kirk Monk – see details below. Kirk has been working initially as Leisure Partnership Manager and more recently as Head of Healthier Communities but through the restructure has now taken on the role of Assistant Director within the Environmental Services Directorate with a focus on Well-Being, which includes Housing, Regulation and Health & Leisure.

The previous Sports Development team would like to thank all clubs, coaches, volunteers and partners organisations that they have been working with over many years and wish them very well for the future.
