Public Health Funerals

Public health funerals are funerals arranged by Local Authorities for those people who have died and have no known relatives to arrange or pay for their funeral; or have relatives who are unable to arrange their funeral. Amber Valley Borough Council have a responsibility to arrange such funerals.

In such cases, Amber Valley Borough Council will arrange and pay for a simple but respectful funeral to keep costs to a minimum.

Where the local authority has arranged and paid for the funeral, they may recover from the estate of the deceased person any expenses incurred.

We receive a large number of requests under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the FOI Act) where the requestor seeks information about public health burials. In order to reduce the amount of time taken dealing with these requests, basic details of public health burials arranged by this Council since 2000 can be viewed here.
