Council salutes Merchant Navy

Its distance from the nearest piece of coastline did not stop Amber Valley playing an active role in ‘Fly The Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day’ on 3 September.

The Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Trevor Ainsworth and Mrs Jennifer Ainsworth along with Petty Officer Paula King and Cadet Sam Duffy from Derby Sea Cadets, raised the Red Ensign at Ripley Town Hall.

The celebratory event is a campaign by Seafarers UK to remember the sacrifices, salute the courage, and support the future of the often unsung heroes of our Merchant Navy. The day is set to become a fixture in the civic calendar and the Merchant Navy is looking forward to it growing in size and stature.
