Fighting poverty in Amber Valley

Putting its weight behind the Derbyshire Partnership Forum’s Anti-Poverty Strategy 2014-17, Amber Valley Borough Council’s Cabinet endorsed the document at its meeting on Wednesday (11 March).

It is one of the specific actions of the Council’s Corporate Plan to ensure that the priorities identified in the Derbyshire Anti-Poverty Strategy are delivered to the benefit of Amber Valley residents. The Strategy identifies four key challenges…

  • Increasing financial inclusion and capability
  • Alleviating fuel poverty and increasing affordable warmth
  • Reducing child poverty
  • Improving employment prospects and skills

Good progress is being made on Food Poverty with four food banks currently serving Amber Valley – Belper, Ripley, Heanor and Langley Mill. A review by Amber Valley CVS is currently looking to identify gaps in the provision.

The Council has also introduced a Community Fund which has benefitted the most deprived areas of the Borough by around £20,000 over the last financial year.

In addition it is committed to fighting fuel poverty and promoting affordable warmth. It has a long track record of supporting low-income households in accessing energy advice, support and energy efficiency measures.

The Council is also represented on the Partnership’s new Anti-Poverty Task Group.

The Anti-Poverty Strategy and Action Plan will appear on the Council’s website.

Commented Leader of the Council, Cllr Paul Jones: “It is important, as a Council, that we play a prominent role in addressing these key challenges surrounding poverty issues in the Borough. Now the Strategy is endorsed we will be pushing ahead with a range of effective actions.”
