Abandoned vehicle problem escalates in Amber Valley

The case of an abandoned burger van and fines for the owner totalling more than £1,200 has highlighted the growing problem of abandoned vehicles in Amber Valley.

Valentin Pirvan from Sheffield, appeared before Southern Derbyshire Magistrates, charged with abandoning a burger van at Pye Bridge Industrial Estate. He failed to attend the court hearing but the case was proved in his absence by Amber Valley Borough Council. He was found guilty and sentenced to a fine of £440 and ordered to pay a Victim Surcharge of £44.00 and prosecution costs of £723.00 – a total of £1,207.00.

The Council has recorded a large increase in the number of abandoned vehicles in the Borough over recent months. There have been 92 reported so far this year, compared to 45 in the same period last year. The decline in the value of scrap is thought to be one of the reasons for this. The Council points out that it will always attempt to prosecute those responsible for abandoning vehicles and look to reclaim the costs of taking cases to court.

The Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing and Public Health, Cllr David Taylor, commented: “Not only are abandoned vehicles an eye-sore but they also represent a significant danger. They become a magnet for young people, and if set on fire pose a major safety risk. We would ask residents to be on the look-out for abandoned vehicles and report them to us.”

Abandoned vehicles can be reported to the Council by calling 01773 841335 or via the website form.
