Herbert Strutt Charity

The ‘Herbert Strutt Charity’ was established by a Scheme dated 15 May 1986 which was subsequently amended by resolution dated 6 September 2017.

The Charity was registered with the Charity Commission on 7 August 1986 and is registered under number 517860. It exists for the general benefit of the inhabitants of  Belper (including Milford) and this charitable purpose is served through one or more of the following:

  • The relief of the aged and poor;
  • The relief of distress and sickness;
  • The provision and support, with the object of improving the condition of life for the inhabitants of the area in the interests of social welfare of facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupation;
  • The provision and support of educational facilities.

The ‘Herbert Strutt Charity’ owes its origins to ‘The Charity for the Benefit of the Inhabitants of Belper’ (comprised in a conveyance dated the 8th December 1908) and the charity called ‘the Herbert Strutt Baths’ (comprised in a conveyance dated the 27th April 1910). However, it no longer owns any buildings or land assets and the Charity consists of a limited fund only.  This fund is made up of the proceeds of sale of New Road Depot in Belper and also includes net sale proceeds from Gibfield Lane Baths, Belper and other minor sales. From this fund, income is potentially available for distribution for the general benefit of the inhabitants of Belper (including Milford) upon successful application to the Charity.

The Cabinet of the Borough Council presently discharges the Council’s responsibility as the sole trustee of the Charity but, following discussions with Belper Town Council and with the approval of the Charity Commission, Belper Town Council will take over this responsibility on 1 April 2018 to whom all applications should be addressed from that date. In view of the pending change over, no applications for funding are currently being invited.
