Payment deferral request

With Coronavirus (COVID-19) now affecting many areas of our services to the residents and businesses of Amber Valley, we are keen to keep you right up-to-date with the changes we are being forced to make. Read more about your council services.

Council tax helps provide:

  • Protection for children who are at risk
  • Home and residential care for the elderly
  • Special education for children with learning difficulties
  • Support for elderly, vulnerable and disabled people

Even if you don't need every service we provide - someone in your family or living near to you does, and you might need them too at some point in your life.

During this time your council tax is needed more than ever, however we appreciate that during the Coronavirus outbreak, financial hardship is being placed on households. We won’t take any new recovery action if residents are temporarily unable to pay council tax, so in effect we have also postponed new debt recovery action for anyone falling into council tax or business rates arrears. See important update below.

We have also put together three options for Amber Valley bill payers.

  1. Continue to pay your bill as normal and this will go towards paying for important services for the community that are needed right now.
  2. If your household income is low, you can apply for council tax support. There are also a number of discounts and exemptions that you may be eligible for.
  3. Defer your council tax payments until later on in the year. Although we understand this is necessary for some households, we ask that those households who can afford to carry on paying as normal to please do so that we can pay all the relevant authorities as soon as possible for the services they provide. See important update below.

Important update

Since mid-March 2020 we have been officially offering council tax payers the opportunity to defer council tax payments, from April and May 2020 to later in the year (usually February and March 2021), some 2,000 council tax payers have deferred. We are unable to offer further periods of deferral.

Anyone experiencing financial difficulties will now need to apply for council tax support.

It is expected that recovery proceedings will commence in July 2020 should accounts be in arrears by late July 2020.
