Two Heanor bowls clubs have celebrated the opening of a new clubhouse provided through a partnership between Amber Valley Borough Council and Futures Housing Group.
Heanor Town and Heanor Excelsior flat green bowling clubs have created the Heanor Community Bowls Association with the aim of increasing participation in the sport and improving the facilities on their Mayfield site adjacent to Heanor Town Football Club.
On Saturday 4 September they were delighted to witness the official opening of their new club house by the Mayor of Amber Valley, Councillor David Taylor. The Amber Valley Borough Council and Futures partnership has also included the building of five affordable homes on the site, three for social rent and two for shared ownership.
The clubhouse is large enough to enable short mat bowls and table tennis to be played which will mean that the site can be used all year and not just through the summer season. It includes a fitted kitchen and will be fully accessible. The new facilities can also be used by the local community for other activities, events and gatherings, and plans are in place to utilise the building for coaching courses to help develop bowls across Amber Valley.
Amber Valley Borough Council’s portfolio holder for the environment, Councillor Trevor Ainsworth, commented: "I am really pleased to see this excellent new community facility providing opportunities to keep local residents fit and healthy by improving physical fitness and reducing isolation. It will also ensure that the sport of bowls in Heanor is fully inclusive by providing more opportunities for disabled people to play, learn to play or return to bowling."
Ceri Theobald, Group Director Strategic Partnerships & Growth at Futures said: "We don’t think of ourselves as just a landlord, the wellbeing of people and communities is just as important to us as the homes we provide. So we’re delighted to join forces with Amber Valley Borough Council to deliver this scheme which delivers on both fronts."
