Activity Alliance, the national charity and leading voice for disabled people in sport and activity, recently hosted the Get Out Get Active (GOGA) celebration event on October 19, bringing together organisations from across the UK to recognise and celebrate the profound impact of the program.
At the heart of the celebration was a unique opportunity for attendees to reflect on the transformative influence of GOGA, a groundbreaking initiative designed to create inclusive opportunities for the least active in society to engage in physical activity together.
Amber Valley Borough Council, a dedicated champion of inclusivity, received special recognition during the event by being honoured with the prestigious Embedding Inclusion Award.
Councillor Elaine Sherman, Deputy Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Health at Amber Valley Borough Council, expressed her pride, stating, "We are incredibly proud to have achieved all our targets and witnessed the transformative impact GOGA has had on our community. This accolade underscores the council's dedication to embracing the GOGA approach so that we can continue to work closely with our communities to positively reshape our practices in the pursuit of inclusivity and community well-being."
GOGA Amber Valley, part of the wider efforts of Towards an Active Amber Valley and Making our Move, aims to understand what works to get the least active disabled and non-disabled people moving together.
GOGA funding has supported various activities in Amber Valley, including SEN Disco, Walking Football, Heanor Bowles Socials, Infinite Wellbeing, Deaf-Initely Women walking and swimming sessions, personalised physical activity support, and local walking groups.
As GOGA approaches the end of the year, it is on track to have reached an impressive milestone of 160,000 disabled and non-disabled individuals engaged in physical activity since its inception.
