Until 1888 Heanor never actually had a Market Place! Any travelling market stalls would have set up at Tag Hill (near to where Jolly Colliers is now). It was only when The Miller-Mundy’s of Shipley Hall broke up the Heanor Hall Estate did the Market Place we know today take shape. Due to the new developments around the Market Place, including a new Town Hall, the commercial centre of town moved from Tag Hill onto Market Street and Market Place with increased shop building over the next few decades.
Over the years the Market Place has had the honour or welcoming royal visits, the momentous arrival of the trams in 1914 and being the home to a number of shops including Newbury’s Grocers, Hunt’s Fish Shop, Jackson’s Butchers, Luker’s Chip Shop, Greaves’ Furniture Shop, Hall’s Electrical, Winfield’s Drapery, Bark’s Gents Outfitters. Do you have any memories of these shops?
By 2023, the Marketplace had become outdated and was facing several issues that required attention. There were trip and slip hazards, and water would not effectively drain from the area. The Marketplace was no longer visually appealing leading to a lack of vibrancy. The former layout included a particularly narrow corner, which was problematic for buses to turn without mounting the pavement.
The regeneration of the marketplace has been a key part of the Future High Streets bid, with over £1 million invested in transforming this community area. AVBC is also bringing The Grammar back to life and turning brownfield land into affordable homes in the heart of Heanor. Thanks to the generous support from the central Government's Future High Streets Fund, along with the help of our dedicated partners and contractors, we've maximised the impact of this valuable investment.
We are now thrilled to unveil the transformation of Heanor Marketplace into a vibrant area for community events and engagement. This regeneration project breathes new life into a historic space, preserving its rich heritage while creating a dynamic environment for the future.
The Marketplace has undergone a complete redesign, with updated infrastructure and contemporary aesthetics. The new design has revitalised the area, making it more inviting and vibrant for visitors and businesses.
The problematic corner has been widened, improving traffic flow and reducing bus congestion. Buses can now navigate the area safely and efficiently, which enhances the public transportation experience.
Heanor Marketplace is a place to shop and eat, as well as a gathering spot for our community. Whether you’re attending local events, enjoying cultural activities, or simply connecting with neighbours, this revitalised space is designed to be the heart of our community for generations to come.
