The Grammar is one of Heanor’s most recognisable historic buildings, and since 2019 we’ve been committed to giving it a new and sustainable future.
The site has gone through many changes. It became the Heanor Grammar School in 1945, with additions including the Science Block (1960) and a new School Hall (1961). Education reorganisations in the 1960s and 1970s saw the school close and the site become part of South East Derbyshire College.
The college closed in 2013 and, under private ownership, the building fell into disrepair.
With the launch of the Government’s Future High Streets Fund (FHSF), Amber Valley Borough Council identified Heanor as a priority for regeneration. The former Grammar School, located close to the Market Place and High Street, became a central part of the successful funding bid. We purchased the building in 2022 and restoration work began in 2023.
Since then, the project has delivered:
We are rightly proud of what has already been achieved, and our goal now is to preserve The Grammar’s heritage while creating a space that supports both community and business use. A key part of this is securing a long-term, sustainable future for the building – ensuring it remains occupied, active, and does not fall back into decline.
