Amber Valley Borough Council Speaks Up for White Ribbon Day 2025

Amber Valley Borough Council will be marking White Ribbon Day on 25 November 2025, standing alongside organisations nationwide to call for an end to violence against women and girls.

White Ribbon Day, led by White Ribbon UK, encourages men and boys to challenge gender-based violence and the attitudes that enable it.

This year’s theme, ‘We Speak Up’, urges people to use their voices and not stay silent when they witness behaviour that feels uncomfortable or inappropriate.

Seemingly small actions, such as sexist remarks, catcalling, staring or dismissive “jokes”, are often brushed aside as harmless. National research shows otherwise.

One in four women will experience sexual assault or attempted assault in their lifetime, and three in five women have faced sexual harassment, bullying or verbal abuse in the workplace. These incidents rarely happen in isolation and are often rooted in attitudes that go unchallenged.

Councillor Chris Emmas-Williams, Leader of Amber Valley Borough Council, said:

“White Ribbon Day is an important reminder that we all have a part to play in challenging violence against women and girls. White Ribbon UK is clear that not all men are part of the problem, but all men can be part of the solution.

“This year’s ‘We Speak Up’ campaign encourages us not to ignore the moments that do not feel right. When we speak up, we show that harmful language or behaviour, however small, will not be dismissed.

“The national figures highlight the importance of speaking up early to prevent harmful attitudes from escalating into more serious violence or abuse.

“I will be wearing my White Ribbon with pride, alongside my fellow councillors and colleagues, to show our collective commitment to being allies in ending violence against women and girls.”

The White Ribbon Day campaign encourages individuals to wear the white ribbon to spark important conversations around men’s violence against women and girls and to show visible support for creating safer communities.

Amber Valley Borough Council remains committed to building a community rooted in respect, equality and safety for everyone. The Council works closely with local charities and support services to promote safety, raise awareness and ensure that help is available for anyone affected by violence or abuse.

By standing with White Ribbon UK, the Council aims to inspire action and emphasise the importance of allyship in ending violence against women and girls.
