Statement on The Grammar following Improvement and Scrutiny Committee meeting

A spokesperson for Amber Valley Borough Council said:

"At its meeting last night, the Improvement and Scrutiny Committee resolved to endorse the Leader’s decision of 25 July 2025.

"Amber Valley Borough Council is now able to confirm that, should Derbyshire County Council lease a portion of the former Heanor Grammar School, a third of the space will remain available for community and business use.

"The grounds will also be open and available for the public. Further plans will see the return of the restored triptych war memorial to the main hall for the community to enjoy.

"We understand that The Grammar is an important building to many in the town, and the Council is committed to creating a space for all.

"Amber Valley Borough Council originally bid for £12.4m of funding in order to renovate and bring the former Heanor Grammar School building back into use, and to redevelop the former Science Block.

"Unfortunately, we were only granted £8.59m of our original bid, which also included the redevelopment of the marketplace and Whysall Street, which meant that our original business plan for the building needed to be revised.

"The replacement of the Science Block with a cinema and restaurants was intended to generate enough income to support the running of the listed Grammar School Building and ensure that it would be maintained well into the future, but after our funding was reduced, we were forced to alter our original plan.

"The Science Block has not been forgotten, and the next step is to undertake further work to support potential funding applications in order to complete the overall vision for the site."
