We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Councillor John McCabe on Saturday 29 March and wanted to share a few words in tribute to his life and service.
Councillor McCabe was Amber Valley Borough Council’s longest-serving councillor. First elected in 1986, he continued to represent his lifelong ward of Somercotes with unwavering dedication for nearly four decades, and served the wider borough with equal passion and pride.
John was deeply committed to local projects and causes that mattered to residents. He cared passionately about making a difference and was never afraid to speak up for the people he represented across Amber Valley.
He held a number of key roles over the years, most recently as our Cabinet Member for Communities and Street Pride. He was a driving force behind many important initiatives and legacy projects that will continue to benefit residents across the borough for years to come.
He’ll be remembered not only for his dedication and experience, but also for his sense of humour, kindness, and the way he brought people together. His presence will be sorely missed by staff, fellow councillors and residents alike.
As a mark of respect, the flag at Ripley Town Hall is continuing to fly at half-mast in his honour.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones at this difficult time.
