Scheduled monuments

Scheduling is the selection of nationally important archaeological sites, scheduled monuments are not always ancient, or visible above ground. They can range from prehistoric standing stones and burial mounds, medieval sites such as castles, monasteries, abandoned farmsteads and villages along with more recent results of human activity such as colliers.

The schedule of monuments is kept by the Secretary of State for Digital, Cultural, Media and Sport, the regime is set out in the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1797 (1).

There are around 20 scheduled monuments in Amber Valley, this list can be viewed on Historic England’s website at historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/
