Paying your bill

Getting your council tax bill

You will normally receive your annual council tax demand notice (bill) in March. It will tell you the amount you have to pay and how that amount has been worked out. The bill will also set out the amount of each instalment and the dates on which each one should be paid. Normally, you will be offered 10 instalments (April -January), although that number will be reduced if the bill is issued after the end of April.

You can request to pay over 12 instalments (April-March), please contact us if you would like to pay over 12 instalments, rather than the statutory 10 instalments.

You will have to pay your council tax instalments on either the 1st, 4th or 7th of the month from April through to January inclusive, unless you pay by direct debit when you can pay on the 5th, 15th or 30th of the month.

If you pay by direct debit you do not need to contact the council when you receive your bill about confirming your payment date.

If you do not currently pay by direct debit and wish to pay by this method please contact the council tax office on 01773 841440 during office hours and we can set up a direct debit over the phone.

However, you can now pay your bill without leaving your home:

  • online via our payments page.
  • our automated payments line on - 0845 3723801 - any time day or night. Follow the recorded prompts to make your payment. This call will cost you 3 pence per minute plus your phone company's access charge.

What if the bill is wrong?

If you think the bill is wrong in any way you should tell the council immediately. Unless you make other arrangements with the council, you must continue to pay the amounts set out in your original bill until you are sent a revised bill.

What if the amount I have to pay changes during the year?

If the amount of council tax you have to pay changes during the year, perhaps because your entitlement to a discount or benefit changes, you will get a new bill/adjustment notice. This will tell you what the new amount for the year is, and what instalments you now have to pay.
