Throughout the Local Government Reorganisation programme, residents, businesses, community organisations and public sector partners have had opportunities to help shape the future of local government in Derbyshire.
This page explains the engagement and consultation that has taken place, how local views were gathered, and how they formed part of the overall decision-making process.
Following the Government's invitation for councils to develop proposals for Local Government Reorganisation, Derbyshire's district and borough councils, together with Derby City Council, carried out a programme of public engagement during summer 2025.
The aim was to understand the views of residents, businesses, local organisations and partner agencies before final proposals were submitted to Government.

More than 7,300 residents took part in the survey, alongside hundreds of conversations at public events and discussions with key stakeholders from across the county.
The feedback received helped to inform the final proposals submitted to Government in November 2025.

The statutory consultation was a formal, legally‑required process which was be carried out by the Government during February and March 2026.
It was separate to the two local LGR public consultations (one led by Derbyshire County Council and one by the districts, boroughs and Derby City Council) which ran last summer and helped to shape the final proposals.
The Government’s consultation was primarily targeted at key national, regional and local stakeholders (referred to as named consultees), but staff, residents, businesses and community organisations could also have their say.
All councils in Derbyshire, including Amber Valley Borough Council, were a named consultee and were asked to submit a formal response to the consultation.
